“You realise an artist is of great import when you can break down their contribution to a scene into single words. Prescription. The Music Institute. KMS. Chicago's Chez Damier has plenty of associations which are spoken of in reverent terms within house music circles. Damier's first major involvement in the scene dates back to the late '80s and the opening of The Music Institute, the club he founded in Detroit alongside Alton Miller and George Baker that was instrumental in techno's development in the city. Around this time he was also a label manager and recording artist for Kevin Saunderson's KMS, releasing all-time greats like Can You Feel It and Untitled. Upon moving back to the Windy City around 1993, Damier hooked up with Ron Trent to create Prescription: The run of singles they released up until 1995 are among the most influential pieces of house music even committed to wax, taking in many of their own titles in collaboration—"Morning Factory," "Sometimes I Feel Like," "Be My." - Resident Advisor

Dancing Room Only welcomes Tony Humphries to House of X alongside resident Rissa Garcia

Since its inception in 2015, the resident DJ and founder, Rissa Garcia, has specifically curated Dancing Room Only to deliver nights that maximize dancefloor damage in the spirit of the NY dance-underground heyday. On Saturday May 14th, we are pleased to welcome Tony Humphries to House of X.

Tony Humphries

Tony Humphries has been DJing nearly 35 years, an incredible achievement that in any other industry would have been rewarded with a carriage clock or service medal. His big break came through a chance meeting with Mastermixer Shep Pettibone at the offices of Prelude Records. Tony handed the maestro a tape and the rest is history. Humphries’ star rose as his KISS FM show (and later HOT 97) lasted for decades.

"One year ago, our very good friend Rissa Garcia launched, what would soon become one of NYC’s can’t miss events ‘Dancing Room Only‘ at Cielo. For the launch, she presented Danny Krivit, with support from Forward Disco residents Sean Cormac & Chili Davis, as well as herself, the DRO resident artist. Over the last year DRO has presented a master class in house music taught by some of the best, including Todd Terry, Charles Webster, Victor Simonelli, Jacques Renault, DJ Spinna, Eli Escobar, Jellybean Benitez and many more. For her one year anniversary, Rissa is bringing back the legendary Danny Krivit with support once again from Sean & Chili. This lineup has been intact now for three Forward Disco events, two Dancing Room Only events and one magical 718 Sessions. Needless to say, our nights with Rissa and Danny have been the kind of nights that people refer to as some of their best nights out and the kind of night that is always met with ‘we can’t wait for the next one’ as soon as the night ends. Do not miss out on this one!

Jellybean Benitez Takes us back to the Funhouse!

On Thursday January 26th, Jellybean Benitez joins Dancing Room Only with a special Funhouse/Paradise Garage style classic house set.

“A giant of New York City club culture during the 1980s, John “Jellybean” Benitez was born to a Puerto Rican mother in the South Bronx. Gravitating toward music at a young age, he started frequenting disco clubs in the mid ‘70s and quickly became an established DJ in the scene.

Although he would go on to play at a variety of storied nightspots, including Studio 54, Paradise Garage and Electric Circus, Benitez truly made his mark with a residency at the Fun House in Manhattan, which he held from 1981 to 1984. During those years, his production and remix career also took off, as he reworked seminal tracks from Rockers Revenge, Jimmy Spicer and Afrika Bambaataa; two of his remixes from 1983’s Flashdancesoundtrack also became sizeable hits. Around the same time, he was enlisted by Madonna to contribute to her debut album, producing “Holiday” (her first hit) and remixing several other tracks.” - Redbull Music Academy

“A world away from the red rope exclusivity of Studio 54, a group of working class kids from New York's outer boroughs created their own alternative scene. Their place of worship was the Fun House and the high priest of hedonism a Latino DJ from the South Bronx named John "Jellybean" Benitez.” -RBMA

Also joining us is David Paglia of Soul Clap Records he'll be closing the night ensuring us a safe landing back home.

David Paglia has releases on Soul Clap Records, Cenote Records and Good Company Records as well as a vinyl press of edits/remixes, Dojo Sessions Volume 1, that flew off the shelves at Halcyon Record Shop in Brooklyn and Love Vinyl in London, UK. His productions have received support from Soul Clap, Bosq, Moodymann, Mark Slee, Thomas Jack, and The Juan Maclean in his mix for Defected Radio.

Also joining in on the fun is local NYC native Jon Martin. Jon's been a deeply embedded in the NYC circuit for quite sometime and you may have heard him most recently at Brooklyn's Starvue private event space.

More about Jon
Jon Martin is a respected DJ, event producer and strategic business consultant based in New York City.

The child of two sociologists with deep roots in the Civil Rights movement and New York’s bohemian counterculture, Jon Martin grew up at the intersection of art, culture and grassroots political activism. In his mid-teens, he parlayed his passion for music into a street promotion gig, distributing flyers for clubs like Red Zone, Palladium and Tunnel while amassing a vast record collection and making slip-cue mixtapes for his high school friends.

A few years later, working in a coat check job at Twilo, he established lifelong friendships with notable nightlife figures including Godfather of House Frankie Knuckles, who introduced him to a cadre of legendary nightlife figures including Nicky Siano, Tedd Patterson and Eric Kupper, and taught him the basics of mixing, controlling a system and working a dancefloor. Knuckles was also a tremendous musical influence, schooling Jon inside the DJ booth of his Sound Factory Bar residency, as well as in the recording studio.

Martin quickly established several small weekly DJ residencies at downtown bars and lounges at which he would cut his teeth playing a broad spectrum of genres and styles. Through these gigs, and working as part of the production team behind local cable show GrooveTV and at now-defunct dance label Rampage Music, Jon began producing larger events at Times Square’s flagship arcade Barcode as well as clubs throughout Manhattan, including Ohm, Cheetah, Club New York, Centro-Fly and 667 Bar Gallery Lounge.

Leaving Rampage for a coveted Digital Content Director position at King Street Sounds, he continued to produce events, both on his own and in conjunction with the label, and contributed to the success of artists and projects including Ananda Project, Dennis Ferrer, Steal Vybe and Underground Artists United for Life.

Jon also provided web development and strategic marketing services for many high-profile DJs, including Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Eric Kupper, Soundman Shorty and Todd Terry, while consulting with an even wider assortment of well-known labels and artists, from UK heavy hitter Defected and jazz-centric ObliqSound to underground pioneer David Mancuso, with whom Jon had developed a deep friendship after finding his way to one of Mancuso’s legendary Loft parties in the early 2000’s.

Jon created the sub:culture brand to provide an opportunity to funnel all of these disparate energies into one direction. Producing weekly events in New York and annually in Miami for the Winter Music Conference and playing several small European tours, as well as a weekly mixshow “Life Will Make You Dance” on CyberJamz internet radio, Jon has made numerous appearances on terrestrial, internet and satellite radio both in the United States and internationally.

Today, Jon continues on his mission to deliver “the medicine in the music” with his private House of Love parties and other sub:culture events, his involvement with husband Craig Roseberry’s KID Recordings label, and as a staff contributor to both David Mancuso’s Loft Parties and Starvue Loft in Bushwick.

Tickets Now on Sale for Danny Krivit at Cielo

“Danny Krivit's 45-year DJ career reads like the evolution of dance music itself. He grew up in the '60s, experiencing the very earliest days of New York disco, and later gained a musical education at some of the world's most legendary nightspots. The Loft, The Gallery, The Paradise Garage—Danny was a regular at them all. Remarkably, Krivit is one of only a handful of DJs other than Larry Levan to have played at The Garage.

"THE ONE THING THAT CAN SOLVE MOST OF OUR PROBLEMS IS DANCING.”

- JAMES BROWN

Sometimes the answer to all of life’s problems is to throw down on the dancefloor! Dancing Room Only NYC, in contrast to today’s more voyeuristic club experiences, intends to take the focus back to the dancefloor. We inspire to hire some of the world’s top talents who've proven to be successful in maintaining a heavy dancefloor vibe reminiscent of the "good old days" alongside some of NYC's finest local talent. Cielo was recently named one of the Top 100 Clubs around the world and here’s why:

Located in New York City’s Meatpacking District, Cielo is a Manhattan nightclub that blends modernity with retro style, a self-proclaimed “mature” experience designed purely for music and dancing. Cielo is an intimate space—holding about 300 people—armed with a Funktion One sound system and a specially designed sunken dance floor, decked out with warm-hued tones bathed in an extensive lighting system.

Cielo largely focuses on house and techno, but it has played host to all sorts of parties, including Francois K’s weekly Monday Deep Space night focusing on music inspired by and in dialogue with dub, Wednesday’s house-focused Roots with Louie Vega and Kevin Hedge, and alternating special events on weekends.

“An embodiment of NY dance culture, this intimate, lounge-like venue, with a Funktion One set-up, is our most significant link between the ashes of the club kid era of the ’90s — when venues like Twilo, Limelight and Tunnel ruled the roost — and today’s generation coming through.

Resistant to the ongoing wave of EDM crashing over the US, ex-Pacha resident Nicolas Matar’s club has stuck to its roots, regularly hosting François K’s Deep Space parties and other local legends like Louie Vega, Danny Krivit and Def Mix top dogs David Morales and Hector Romero still, while Fritz Kalkbrenner and HELENA visited just last month.”

Dancing Room Only NYC Presents Forward Disco featuring Danny Krivit

“Danny Krivit's 45-year DJ career reads like the evolution of dance music itself. He grew up in the '60s, experiencing the very earliest days of New York disco, and later gained a musical education at some of the world's most legendary nightspots. The Loft, The Gallery, The Paradise Garage—Danny was a regular at them all. Remarkably, Krivit is one of only a handful of DJs other than Larry Levan to have played at The Garage.

Krivit's experiences in the '70s and '80s have had a lasting effect on him, informing almost every move he's made since. His legendary Body & Soul night, co-founded with François Kevorkian and Joe Claussell, and 718 Sessions, his still hugely popular monthly party, were established on principles laid down during this golden period. Aside from his illustrious DJ career, Krivit is also a remix legend. He has over 130 editing credits to his name, including his rework of MFSB's "Love Is the Message," which is considered by many to be the greatest edit of all time. “
