Fri 2/09: Dancing Room Only w/Son of Sound & Rissa Garcia
Son of Sound:
With a discography of releases dating back to 1991, New York native Henry Maldonado credits his home city as inspiration and motivation for his art. As part of the House 2 House trio on Strictly Rhythm, Maldonado and crew fired out a relentless assault of New York style sampled and deep house tracks coveted by New York mainstays Little Louie Vega, Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Tony Humphries, Roger Sanchez, Timmy Regisford and many others.
Producing tracks would quickly lead to vocal projects and song writing with a slew of notable vocalists such as Karen Pollack, Arnold Jarvis, Carol Sylvan, Wanda Nash and Bobby Harding to name a few. In the mid 1990s his solo Rhythm Section projects found homes on Masters At Work records, Henry Street, King Street, and his recent Native Underground project with singer Javi (Javi Silva) masterfully combines early '80s R&B, soul, hip-hop, electro-funk and house.
District 30 is Henry's latest label and features a catalog of Son Of Sound releases, including the self-titled Son Of Sound full length, with tracks coveted by DJ-Jus-Ed, Ashley Beedle, Danny Tenaglia and many others. Today Henry produces and DJs exclusively under Son Of Sound and continues to push the limits of the underground by taking his knowledge of the culture of days past, and combining it with a deep love for his native New York City. If it sounds like his production and playing style has New York written all over it - it does.
Rissa Garcia:
"Born and raised with the classic NYC influences all around her, she has become a driving force of her hometown scene. In addition to running NightChild records, she is the founder & resident DJ of the Dancing Room Only NYC event which has welcome several legends behind the decks including Mood II Swing, DJ Spinna, Danny Krivit , Todd Terry and Jellybean Benitez." -Music is My Sanctuary

Rissa Garcia: The Bounce FM Interview
Tell us about your party Dancing Room Only.
Well, Dancing Room Only started as a concept back in 2015. We started out very small, with the first event being in the back room at a bar called the Grahm in Williamsburg. After that we held one in the Halcyon Shop space at Output Club. Fortunately months later, the stars aligned and I had an opportunity to do a somewhat monthly Thursday event at Cielo, which lasted a little over a year but we wanted to do some weekend nights as well so we decided to bounce around to other clubs. We’ll be at Le Bain every once in a while at the Standard Hotel, Black Flamingo, and most recently we partnered with our friends at Forward Disco and had Mood II Swing at Good Room, which turned out to be a really great party.
What was the inspiration behind the party?
For me, it was going out, seeing the crowds or even videos online, and people weren’t dancing. They were more focused on the DJ just staring at them in awe or filming. So to combat today’s more standing room only club experience I decided to create a brand called “Dancing Room Only”.
When you go to a party like 718 Sessions (which is my favorite party and one of my inspirations) it has that old New York City vibe. You have people from all different walks of life, age groups, cultures, etc. …..everybody dancing and having a good time. You don't see a lot of videos being filmed throughout the crowd. Everybody's connecting with each other. You look across the room, they're smiling, you’re smiling and you’re on the same level…..they love the music and they’re there to just dance, and that's it. And that’s the kind of party I truly enjoy and want to try to continue for generations on.
For me, a lot of that was missing in today's parties; the younger kids were experiencing music and club land in a different way. They're not there so much to dance, they're there to just be there…. because it's cool or “lit” as they say. But they're not experiencing the party, they're with their phones, posting every five minutes letting everyone know how cool they are…lol. It's not so much about the music and dancing so much as the DJs or event name and the hype surrounding it.

Dancing Room Only & Forward Disco present Mood II Swing@Good Room
Collectively, songwriter-producer, Lem Springsteen, and composer-producer, John Ciafone work together as the production duo known as Mood II Swing. They met in the early 90s as members of a recording group where John and Lem wrote and produced tracks together. Prior to their meeting, one might consider them worlds apart. John was inspired by classical music, rock, and hip-hop. He began as a DJ and started producing music with an underground hip hop group on Long Island, New York, in the mid 80s. Lem was writing R&B songs, at a tender age and gigging a single signed to Chrysalis UK around the New York city club circuit. Both, musically trained and inspired by international Pop music of the early 90s, Lem and John decided to forge their worlds and begin producing music together.
Mood II Swing first started by working together on original material in the early 90s, which was well received by DJs in the NY club scene. Their sound blended different styles within dance music, which was unique at the time. Thanks to the influence of NY House DJs & veteran producers, such as Masters at Work, Mood II Swing also started remixing songs for major labels & indie recording artists.
Eventually, a symbiosis was created where Lem’s chords and musical progressions would inspire drums, keyboards, and arrangements by John. Likewise, John’s drum programming, basslines, and keyboards became the foundation for Lem to write lyrics and melodies. Mood II Swing began to apply their unique style to their own productions, as well as remixes.Mood II Swing’s name recognition turned the start-up music production company into a group name with a cult following of House music lovers, globally. The duo is responsible for many dance floor gems and the UK radio crossover hit “Free” by Ultra Nate.
Currently, in the post millennium, with a resurgence of early 90’s House music, John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen have rejoined as a production team to showcase their music in DJ sets. Mood II Swing are now working with UK Agency, Air London, and they have a compilation to be released in 2016 titled, ‘Strictly Mood II Swing’ on the Defected UK label. Lem Springsteen and John Ciafone intend to showcase their music to new generation of House music lovers through the release of their classic tracks and new productions.
Joining Mood II Swing are Forward Disco residents Sean Cormac & Chili Davis, Dancing Room Only resident Rissa Garcia and King Street Sounds The Wig.

Dancing Room Only with Eli Escobar and Rissa Garcia
Eli Escobar is a mainstay in the New York underground, considered a connoisseur of quality sounds both behind the decks and in the studio. As a DJ, he is technically flawless and a genuine selector, which has seen him land numerous residencies at Le Bain, Submercer, and Tiki Disco just to name a few. As a producer, he’s had his finest year to-date, with the release of his sophmore album on Classic Music Company selling-out on vinyl not once, but twice. His classic-sounding fusion of house and disco makes his music feel instantly timeless – for that reason alone, Eli Escobar’s going nowhere soon and is set for another year to remember in 2017.
Born and raised with the classic NYC influences all around her, she has become a driving force of her hometown scene. In addition to running NightChild records, she is the founder & resident DJ of Dancing Room Only NYC which has welcome several legends behind the decks like Todd Terry, Danny Krivit, Jellybean Benitez, DJ Spinna and more.

Just Announced | Dancing Room Only: Greco & Ant Larock, Rissa Garcia and Day Cart
Greco(Strictly Rhythm/Dopewax/Rawsome)
A young man driven by a fundamental motivation whose character is not strictly confined to the walls of a studio would be a definition fit for DJ/Producer Thomas Greco. His passion within the industry to create art as a means to express himself musically as well as a means to communicate with his audience separate this artist from the rest. His style includes creating a kinetic energy throughout his audience that would express the character he embodies within his art. Such an ambitious character is one that demonstrates a light sense of humor and a positive attitude that motivates his audience to simply have a great time and dance!
Ant La Rock(Nervous/D-Vine Sounds/Dopewax)
Ant LaRock's first single was picked up by Todd Terry's InHouse Records, propelling him amongst House royalty. After several releases, 2015 brought major label remixes for the likes of Giorgio Moroder's pairing with Kyle Minogue on "Right Here Right Now" and future pop icon Petite Meller's "Babylove". Ant's contributions helped both singles land heavily on Billboard Dance charts as well as on dance floors. Later that year Ant produced a dirty floor-stomper for Charlotte Devaney's collaboration with Snoop Dogg on Vigin/EMI. An April 2015 collaboration with his mentor, Todd "the God" himself, welcomed the Ministry of Sound release of "Back Around" followed by the subsequent remix EP on Inhouse. 2016 is starting off with a bang for Ant with a fresh EP on the venerable Nervous Records. Constantly innovating, bending genres and refining, Ant LaRock demands attention.
Rissa Garcia(Resident Dancing Room Only)
Born and raised with the classic NYC influences all around her, she has become a driving force of her hometown scene. In addition to running NightChild records, she is the founder & resident DJ of the Dancing Room Only NYC which has welcome several legends behind the decks including DJ Spinna, Danny Krivit, Todd Terry and Jellybean Benitez.
Day Cart
Growing up in the Tri-State area, Day Cart, aka Harrison Williams, was exposed to the tenacious and bustling nightlife scene that has evolved in NYC. Dance music became a firm passion of his after attending various house and techno warehouse parties that seemed to pop up like weeds, and he quickly plugged himself into the community. After exploring the wide range of genres and styles that are ever present within the culture, Harrison was hooked to the gritty underground where music is a shared obsession by many who find themselves wrapped up in the dimly lit rooms.
With a degree in Philosophy and Psychology he has used his skills to analyze and interpret the disparate emotions felt while in the dance. He spent time as the Managing Editor of Magnetic Magazine and is currently the East Coast Editor at the renowned Mixmag Magazine located in the Brooklyn office.
Also an experienced DJ, he has held a monthly residency at one of the Lower East Side’s most attended DIY venues, Leftfield NYC, and continues to put on events dubbed Goonroom with co-founder Wig-Wam.
FORWARD DISCO: ANOTHER NIGHT W/DEF MIX
Forward Disco presents: Another Night with Def Mix
Line-up:
Dj David Morales
Hector Romero
Rissa Garcia
Forward Disco residents:
Sean Cormac & Chili Davis
Doors Open early: 9PM
Since first playing Forward Disco back in 2013, Hector Romero has made us feel like a part of the Def Mix family. Since then, we have been together for a number of events, including an incredible boat party, the Def Mix annual for WMC in Miami and that special night in 2015 when we presented a night with Def Mix at Cielo with Hector and Dj David Morales. Well, we are long overdue for another one of those special nights. For the closing of our Summer Series at Cielo, Forward Disco presents a Night with Def Mix: David Morales, Hector Romero and FD residents Sean Cormac & Chili Davis.
If you were at part 1, you know what a magical night that was. After a summer where David & Hector have been delivering more than just the goods overseas, this will be a chance to catch them on their home turf. David has been relentless lately, bringing that Red Zone alias and sound to labels such as Cadenza, Suara, Quantize, MoBlack and of course his own Def Mix imprint. Never one to be pigeon holed, David’s funkier side, ‘The Face‘ will see a re-emergence with an upcoming release on Def Mix, which is the perfect compliment to his recent work with Glitterbox and Defected.
Hector continues to establish himself as one of the premier artists from NYC. After topping the charts with his Nervous Records compilation, this summer has seen Hector take hold of events in Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece to name but a few. One of the widest ranging DJs, Hector knows more than anyone how to grab the pulse of a NYC dancefloor.
We are super excited that Dancing Room Only NYC boss Rissa Garcia is joining us as well.
Born and raised in what was once considered the mecca of house music, New York City, Rissa Garcia caught the music bug at a very early age. She grew up listening to all sorts of rhythms including Latin, jazz, R&B,soul, house, rock, disco and funk. Years later she made her way into the club scene and in the year 2000, she discovered a club called Vinyl with a DJ named Danny Tenaglia. She fell in love with the atmoshphere while falling deeper in love with the music. "My soul just seemed to come alive & it completely engulfed me. From the lights to the vibe to the dark walls & sexiness in the air, this is exactly what I have been searching for, this was my Paradise Garage." Inspired by the man who poured his heart & soul into his music, along with many others who do the same, she began to collect records and learn the true art of the DJ. Her first gig back in 2004 was at a small lounge on NYC's Lower East Side where she received rave reviews. Since then Rissa has been lucky enough to have played some of the best venues in NYC, such as Cielo, Output,Santos Party House,TBA and more.
She currently runs her own imprint, NightChild Records, and has released over sixty EP's from producers across the globe. With some of her recent releases receiving support from Alexander Robotnik, Louie Vega, X-Press 2, Jus-Ed and more, she strives to offer a consistent quality synonymous with those who have an influence on her.
Forward Disco residents Sean Cormac & Chili Davis have been holding things down at Cielo for over five years now (recently celebrating our five year anniversary with a residents night) Sean & Chili will not only be celebrating their birthdays, they will be setting the tone for David & Hector for this special closing to our fifth summer series at NY’s home for house music.

Hurricane Harvey Fundraiser
Being 1,650 miles away from Houston makes it difficult for us to physically be there to help the tens of thousands of families evacuating their homes due to Hurricane Harvey, which has now been deemed likely to be "the most damaging storm in U.S. history", by Dr. Joel N. Myers, the founder of Accuweather.
This coming Friday, we are uniting together to stand (and dance) in solidarity with those who've been impacted by last week's catastrophic flooding, to raise critically-needed funds for the nonprofits and relief effort groups providing aid and resources to the massive number of people, wildlife and life sustaining infrastructures impacted by last week's catastrophic flooding of Houston and surrounding areas.
Join us, as 10 local DJs take the stage for an eclectic evening of quality music, along with a live painting by Adal Ray of Majestic Tattoo NYC.
No cover charge. 21+ to enter
Donation boxes will be available on stage to donate cash to selected reputable charities. A description of each charity will be provided as well (suggestions welcome).

6/22/17 Dancing Room Only with Quentin Harris, Joeski & Rissa Garcia at Cielo
Dancing Room Only welcomes Def Mix’s Quentin Harris & Strictly Rhythm/Defected Records artist Joeski!
Dancing Room Only welcomes Def Mix’s Quentin Harris & Strictly Rhythm/Defected Records artist Joeski!
Quentin Harris
Growing up in Detroit before moving to New York, Quentin Harris burst onto the international scene in 2002 and has remained at the very top of the tree ever since. Long before that however, he was making a name for himself as a technically brilliant resident DJ at seminal New York club The Shelter. Of course, he has also played around the world including at Stereo in Montreal, Balux and Home in Athens, Cheers in Paris, Roxy Blue in Toronto, Ministry Of Sound in the UK and many other such hotpots.
Quentin has also, naturally, dived head-first into production, releasing a collection of high-quality 12″ cuts on labels including Space Kat Records, 157 Shelter and NRK. Drawing inspiration from producers like Martin Solveig, Charles Webster, and Carl Craig, Quentin has received praise from Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell and Francois K among others released on 157 Shelter Recordings and has remixed Junior Vasquez, Jill Scott and Patti LaBelle. Some of his biggest tracks include The Shelter Anthem on Restricted Access, Got 2 Love on Space Kat and Let’s Be Young on Unrestricted Access. In his time Quentin has also compiled and mixed disc 3 of the Southport Weekender Volume 3 compilation alongside Dimitri and Jazzie B. 2010 saw the releases of the highly anticipated album Sacrifice on top US label Strictly Rhythm and it showcased impressive collaborations as diverse as Jason Walker, Ultra Nate, Georgia Cee, Koffee, Denise Henderson and Drew Vision. While these days he considers himself first and foremost a producer, Quentin’s DJ skills are still in high demand.
Joeski
“As a Brooklyn-born/Queens-raised New Yorker, Joe Flores got in on the ground floor during the glory days of the New York House scene, playing his first gig as the artist we’ve all come to know as “Joeski” way back in 1991. With the opportunity to break in as a DJ at infamous dance institutions such as The Limelight, Palladium, The Tunnel, and NASA, those legendary venues served as the classrooms in which Flores earned his masters in the science and art of controlling a dancefloor. Plenty of DJs from that era have long-since vanished into obscurity, but Joeski has remained active for the long-haul, despite dealing with the struggles that the emergence of the digital era placed upon essentially every DJ and producer who was active and successful during the days when analog gear and vinyl were the only tools of the trade.
Joeski’s direction took an upward shift in recent years, following a stint that lasted several years in which he was forced to take a step back. During this period, he predominantly only released music on his label, Maya Recordings. Taking those steps back meant a slow fade from the spotlight, as the dance music industry, in the U.S. especially, was undergoing a period of great change, shifting toward a focus on EDM and simultaneously moving toward the digitally-driven industry we are in today.
The sudden incline in output from Joeski has brought us an onslaught of powerhouse EPs and remixes, growing his already staggeringly large discography. In 2016, Joeski’s name graced the catalogs of labels such as Defected, Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels, Poker Flat, and more. This sudden move toward ramping up his production output and returning to releasing on prominent labels has effectively put the name Joeski back on the map as a force to be reckoned with.
Not only one of the most diverse producers of House Music in the world, Joe is also one of the most capable and experienced DJs still around since those aforementioned and wildly revered days – back when “Sound Factory was like church,” as he put it when 5 Mag had a chance to link up with him as he prepped for a busy gig-filled schedule during Miami Music Week.
Being a man of many words and an equal number of passionate views led to our touching on what led to his ups and downs, as he reminisced about his early influences, explained his re-emergence on the international scene, and delivered his strong opinions on the state of today’s music industry.”- 5 Magazine

"One year ago, our very good friend Rissa Garcia launched, what would soon become one of NYC’s can’t miss events ‘Dancing Room Only‘ at Cielo. For the launch, she presented Danny Krivit, with support from Forward Disco residents Sean Cormac & Chili Davis, as well as herself, the DRO resident artist. Over the last year DRO has presented a master class in house music taught by some of the best, including Todd Terry, Charles Webster, Victor Simonelli, Jacques Renault, DJ Spinna, Eli Escobar, Jellybean Benitez and many more. For her one year anniversary, Rissa is bringing back the legendary Danny Krivit with support once again from Sean & Chili. This lineup has been intact now for three Forward Disco events, two Dancing Room Only events and one magical 718 Sessions. Needless to say, our nights with Rissa and Danny have been the kind of nights that people refer to as some of their best nights out and the kind of night that is always met with ‘we can’t wait for the next one’ as soon as the night ends. Do not miss out on this one!
