While all of us are living the quarantine life, Good Room has asked friends and residents to share mixes for our Solitude Series so you can dance on your own. The ninth mix comes from Rissa Garcia. NYC-based Rissa Garcia, is the Dancing Room Only resident DJ and founder of NightChild Records. An avid record collector, Rissa brings so much energy and joy to the dancefloor through her DJ sets. Here's what she had to say about her mix;

"Good Room has always been so warm and welcoming to the underground dance community and I’m happy to be able to contribute in any way I can to help them in such an uncertain and tumultuous time for any small business. We have no idea when we will be able to dance together again so I made this mix as a reminder to us all that no matter what we face in life we always have music to help get us through. And as long as we music we are never truly alone. “Who hears music feels his solitude peopled at once"."

Good Room is currently closed due the COVID-19 pandemic. If you would like to donate to the club to help cover staff and fixed costs you can donate on Venmo @goodroombk or PayPal - paypal.me/goodroombk.

Rissa Garcia Untitled Music Q&A and Mix

rissagarcia_banner.jpg

What I admire about Rissa Garcia is that she is just doing what she loves week in week out. You never hear any bullshit from her, she is consistently working hard at her passions, be that DJ’ing or her well respected label Nightchild Records. For someone at the heart of the NYC club scene and one of the most connected people I know I actually know zero about the person behind it all. In an era of obsessive gender equality she is the real poster child for the scene - time-served, hard-working, low-profile and passionate about quality over hype.

Rissa Garcia Interview

 What I admire about Rissa Garcia is that she is just doing what she loves week in week out. You never hear any bullshit from her, she is consistently working hard at her passions, be that DJ’ing or her well respected label Nightchild Records. For someone at the heart of the NYC club scene and one of the most connected people I know I actually know zero about the person behind it all. In an era of obsessive gender equality she is the real poster child for the scene - time-served, hard-working, low-profile and passionate about quality over hype.Thanks for taking the time out to speak Rissa - you’re one of the first names I roll off when people ask about good DJ’s in the scene - tell us a little about what drives you?

Music, most importantly. People that doubted me, people that hope I fail at every turn. And honestly,I really can’t fathom a life without doing this so I’ll do whatever it takes to keep on doing it. A few years ago, I decided I didn’t want to live the robot lifestyle of working 9-5 day in and day out while daydreaming of doing what I really wanted to do and what I felt so deeply to my core I really should be doing.

From the outside world you’re very low profile but very successful - what’s the secret of your success?

Deli Magazine: Rissa Garcia splits 90s house and modern grooves, plays Elsewhere 8.10

10247324_708788895845437_379254125903015037_n.jpg

New York DJ and label boss Rissa Garcia knows how to strike the right chord between heavy nostalgia and classic sounds. Her recent drop “Baby I Can Feel It” demonstrates this aptitude, interpolating 90s piano house with more contemporary synthetic and percussive accents.

It endows “Baby” with a feeling that’s as nostalgic as it is danceable, employing a vintage aesthetic that never feels derivative or pandering; rather, “Baby I Can Feel It” shows Garcia’s ability to recognize the electronic textures that are timeless, and utilize them in novel, groovy ways. Stream this bop below, and catch Rissa Garcia at Elsewhere on August 10th alongside Classixx, Young Franco, and Alejandra Sabillon.
