MOTR SUMMER II - a fundraiser & party to support the Music on the RISE Foundation feat. Ultra Violet, Rissa Garcia, Aspirin & Más Corazón b2b Blvck Truffle

The Music on the RISE Foundation (or “MOTR” ) is an organization that is dedicated to providing robust musical education, cultural music heritage and professional music industry guidance to black and latino youth in underserved communities severely lacking in music education funding in the NYC metropolitan area.

This past spring we wrapped up our virtual pilot program with the DOE school Walkabout Bronx High School, where our program reached 51 students as both a club and end of the year initiative. We are currently gearing up for our fall programs which will be our first in person initiatives post pandemic.

Based out of Key+Needle Studios in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - MOTR’s fundraisers aim to create community around the foundation’s ethos in order to amplify and raise awareness on the importance of saving the arts in NYC’s underserved public schools.

Friday July 16th: Danny Krivit & Rissa Garcia at 3 Dollar Bill

"Danny Krivit, really should need no introduction to anyone with even a whisker of an interest in this incredible thing we call the world of 'dance' music. Growing up in Greenwich Village, New York City, in the 1960s, his mother was an accomplished jazz singer and his father was the manager of legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker before going on to open up “The Ninth Circle”, a Village hot spot. Starting DJing at age 14 and learning from all the greats, including James Brown, David Mancuso and Larry Levan he became synonymous with his funk, soul, and disco edits (under the Mr. K name). His list of residencies and associations read like the dictionary of music he is. Responsible for the immensely popular 718 Sessions and one-third of the Body & Soul collective, we caught up with Mr K over our increasingly dodgy skype connection ahead of his sidexside appearance this weekend with Horse Meat Disco for an insight into the mind of one of house music’s living legends." -Ransom Note

New York house DJ, producer and label head Rissa Garcia has long bagged a reputation as a driving force within her hometown scene. Rinsing her vast stack of vinyl at clubs across NYC for the best part of two decades, she's shared the decks with icons Danny Tenaglia, Danny Krivit, Tony Humphries and Kenny Dope, among more.

Rissa caught the music bug at a very early age. As she avidly recalls her childhood, memories of backyard parties within her close-knit Staten Island neighbourhood cut through with a real sense of fondness and pride. Experiencing that house party vibe long before she'd firmly implant herself on New York's hallowed dance floors stayed with her.

In 2000 she discovered Club Vinyl with NYC linchpin Danny Tenaglia behind the booth. "My soul just seemed to come alive and it completely engulfed me. From the lights to the vibe to the dark walls and sexiness in the air, it was exactly what I had been searching for. This was my Paradise Garage." Decidedly hooked, she was there without fail every Friday immersing herself in club culture with Tenaglia at the helm. Emboldened by a sense of growing intuition, soon it was clear that she needed to be the one controlling the room, manipulating and utilizing rhythms to invigorate the crowd.

Since landing her first gig in 2004 at an intimate lounge on NYC's Lower East Side, she's steadily risen through the ranks, laying down selections which dive between classics, house, funk, soul and everything in between at Cielo Club, Output, Avant Gardner, Good Room and Elsewhere Space.

From her earliest clubbing days, Rissa recognized and appreciated that the music itself is at the heart of the experience, and she shuns static crowds that favor the spectacle of watching the DJ. Preferring to remain in the shadows, she shrewdly selects tracks that incite clubbers to move, groove, flow and catch the beat to the last drop. Launching her own event series Dancing Room Only gave her that opportunity to come through with her own statement on what the clubbing experience should be. "DJs are there to make you dance. I started this event to get a message out to younger generations coming through the scene that it's not all about the glamour - it's about everybody being together. Quit staring at the DJ, put the phones off and dance."

Re-Launching NightChild Records in 2018, Rissa’s label has become an exciting hub for top-notch material which reach across the house spectrum. Nearing its 100th release, recent highlights include a propulsive cut from house music icon Todd Terry, one which had the remix treatment from fellow New Yorkers Sean Cormac and Jon Billick, as well as Rissa herself. While she pours her energy into nurturing Nightchild Records, with this being where fans of her sound will find most of her club sounds, she’s also dropped releases through labels Plastik People Recordings, Jakdat Records, Rhythm & Culture and LW Recordings, among more.

Out Now: Rissa Garcia-Love is Lifting Me

LILM2_Banner.jpg

New York based, Dancing Room Only resident Rissa Garcia returns to her own NightChild Records this March with the ‘Love Is Lifting Me’ EP. Inspired by Danny Tenaglia during his residency at Club Vinyl from 1999 - 2004, Rissa Garcia has been avidly collecting records and playing them at various high-profile club gigs for over a decade. During this time she's shared the decks with Danny Krivit, Todd Terry, Tony Humphries, Kenny Dope and Ultra Nate, her productions channel the vast amount of dance music knowledge she's accumulated and here this continues with her latest collection of cuts making up the ‘Love Is Lifting Me’ EP.

‘Don’t Come For Free’ leads with a bumpy drum groove, classic chord sequences and driving subs and soulful vocals throughout. ‘Answer To My Prayer’ follows next, employing a shuffled snares, organic percussion and plucked synth stabs as its foundation while bright, expansive piano stabs and soaring vocal chants further fuel the emotive, peak-time feel. Title-track ‘Love Is Lifting Me’ then rounds out the release, bringing robust toms, popping congas and swirling shakers into the limelight amongst an amalgamation of airy organ hits, soft chords and cut up vocal samples uttering the track’s title

Paper Mag Premieres Rissa Garcia's Remix of Emergency Tiara Latest Single "Dancing in the Living Room"

Screen Shot 2021-03-03 at 10.54.28 PM.png

Emergency Tiara's '70s-inflected "Dancing in the Living Room" is an anthem for the times, when clubs are all closed and our only form of escapism can happen at home. Still, frontwoman Juri Jinnai — who was born in Tokyo and lives in NYC — makes the remote occasion as glamorous as any night out in Manhattan. "Dance like no one's watching," she sings, her slithery voice roller skating above the production's rotating disco ball.

Today, Emergency Tiara returns with a full, new remix EP, featuring four updates from legendary DJs who either identify as queer or women: JD Samson (of Le Tigre fame), Rissa GarciaKim Anh and Nimmo.

Music is My Sanctuary: Touch of Love Mixes 003

TouchofLove03.jpg

The latest edition of RIssa Garcia’s Touch of Love Mix Series is now live.

This mix was made with the intention of letting go. After 4 years of turmoil and uncertainty in the US, we finally felt able to breathe again.

With the appointment of our new President Elect here in the states, there was a palpable energy shift in the air, an electric buzz in the streets of NYC and it was inspiring. Touch of Love 003 is a mix made to just close your eyes, breathe and let go of your cares, get lost in the music because for the first time in a long time, I feel hope again.
